Dan Howland

The most important thing in my bio is that I will work hard to protect your interests and serve you well if you choose me for your broker whether you are buying or selling a boat or yacht. A boat is a huge commitment of your time and money and I take that very seriously. I have the knowledge, the ability, and the desire to provide you with top notch professional service and consultation with the highest degree of integrity.


If you're wondering how long I've been doing this or how I got into the boat business see below, but it won't hurt my feelings at all if you really don't want to know my life story. I'd rather focus on your next boat purchase or sale!

My family and my career in the boating industry have long been the most important things to me.


Born in Ohio, I got salt water in my veins as a teenager living with my aunt and uncle in Saunderstown, Rhode Island. Saunderstown, the friends I made there, the bay, the boats, and particularly my Uncle Bob Aldrich, had a profound influence on me. Anyone who knew him knows why. He was the most honorable, hard working, decent, fun loving man I have ever known. He was also as salty as they come. My Uncle Bob and Aunt Katrina showed me what yachting was all about on their boat Cormorant, a 34’ John Alden Design single engine wooden boat built in 1926.


Cormorant, in modern times, would be called a displacement hull lobster yacht. Cormorant was a very important part of my family until Uncle Robert died when I was almost 40 years old and afterwards when my cousin took her over. Several years ago I saw her in Wickford undergoing a full restoration by her new owner. She was just fast enough for a dinner cruise with great food and plenty of drink from Wickford to Newport, returning to Wickford late at night, chugging up the bay from one lighted buoy to the next with a boat load of happy people. Those chilly summer nights on Narragansett Bay were magical and taught me about the joys of boating and as well as many basic boating skills.


Short on experience but long on determination and persistence, at 22 I set out to find a job on a boat. I took advantage of the freedom and excitement that the boat business could provide. My first jobs included being captain of a 37’ family sailing yacht in Boston; 1st mate on a 54’ charter schooner (another wooden John Alden Design built in 1926) in the Virgin Islands; delivery crew across the Atlantic on a Britton Chance 76’ custom aluminum maxi ocean racer; 1st mate on a Cal 2-46 ketch from Ft Lauderdale to Dan Point, CA; and skipper of a 42’ commercial albacore fishing boat between San Diego and Santa Cruz, CA. Between boat jobs, I worked as a plumber’s apprentice in four states from Rhode Island to California, and rigged and commissioned boats in San Diego. Not bad (I thought at the time) for a kid from Ohio with almost no prior experience on a boat over 15’!


In 1980, recently married and a child on the way, in Corpus Christi, TX, I turned to boat sales and have been at it ever since in Texas and Florida. We moved to Bradenton, Florida in 1995 from Texas where my two daughters were born.


I joined Galati Yacht Sales in August of 2006 and I cannot imagine working for another boat dealer. My only regret is that I did not join Galati Yacht Sales sooner! Each member of the Galati family is a pleasure to work with and the culture of the company is one of honesty, hard work, and great relationships.
